With respect to the newbie builder it is very critical that you have every thing in place before you start any plan. Keep in mind the obvious way to do this is to have a action plan. So you’ve decided, you intend to build a shed using a set of plans. Then 1st we must put your plan of action into place, and start by listing a series of questions you will want answered before you even start building…
1. What do you really need the shed for?
First of all you could be thinking its going to be used to hold just the yard tools. Think hard on this. Is it going to become a family shed? In other words, are the kids want to want to store their toys inside? Or may be the wife going to find a new place for the Christmas decorations, in the shed? So come up with a definitive rule of what the shed is going to be used for.
2. What size would you like it to be?
Now that you’ve learned exactly what it’s going to be used for, that can give you the size that you’re going to want. Make sure you remember to plan for future years. If its restricted to yard outdoor stuff, you will likely be adding to your collection over the next few years, which means you usually do not want to have to build a shed once again.
3. Where can you place it?
You need to determine where the proper spot for it. It has to be somewhere accessible, without having to walk through your flowerbeds. Definitely put aside so it doesn’t interfere with your landscaping. Again consider the long run, you don’t want to have to move it.
Now is the area you’ve chosen for it and the dimensions of the shed you want appropriate? If not then there must be a compromise, either in the location or perhaps the size.
4. Will it need to be insulated, water-proof, or open?
If you’re in a four season climatethen you need to decide what seasons you need the shed to be able to stand up to the most.
5. Would you have to have a building permit?
Determine what your local by-laws are for building a shed. It would be bad to get your project done ,and have city officials show up and tell you to take it down. Normally you won’t need a building permit if you stay within a particular size, but in case you have determined to go larger than what’s allowed, you’ll need to submit building plans for consent.
6. Now probably the most vital questions, What’s your allowance for this project?
Everything you’ve decided up to now is based upon your budget. Its kind of difficult to set a budget when you haven’t figured out the price of materials yet. Its your budget that’s going to help you when it comes time to purchase your building shed plans.
7. Where should you get your plans for building a shed?
You have lots of answers now. The purpose, the size, the budget, and now to answer the last question. To do this you will have to take a look at what resources are available to you. Your local home and garden and building center, home planners, not to mention the internet.
